The job
The existing house was sound but closed off from its own garden — a solid rear wall with two small windows facing the best aspect on the plot.
The extension is an independent frame set against that wall rather than tied into it, which avoids loading foundations that were never designed for it and means differential settlement shows up at a movement joint instead of as a crack across the render.
The opening between old and new was formed last, once the new structure was carrying its own load.
